Reading through the eyes of animals

Our latest Nature Links book club pick is The Eyes and the Impossible by Dave Eggers, a delightful and thought-provoking story told through the perspective of a dog named Johannes. As a free-spirited, sharp-eyed canine, Johannes observes and interacts with the animals and humans in a sprawling city park, grappling with themes of freedom, captivity, and collaboration.

We chose this book because our participants share a deep love for animals, and the unique narrative from an animal’s viewpoint has sparked engaging discussions. Together, we've explored questions like: What does freedom mean for animals? Are human interactions with animals more positive or harmful? How might animals communicate and collaborate across species?

As our first fiction book, The Eyes and the Impossible has been an exciting shift, bringing new energy and curiosity to our discussions. The suspense of what might happen next keeps everyone eagerly reading—and ready to share their insights during each session. Stay tuned as we journey deeper into this captivating story!
